Jonathan smith

Jonathan Smith was born in 1958 and grew up in Aberdeenshire and on the Island of Lewis. He returns there several times a year for his art; the same stretch of Hebridean coastline has been his inspiration for thirty years. His paintings are a distillation of his experiences: light, air, weather and season.

Working in a range of materials on paper or canvas, rich surfaces are created through layers of ink, acrylic or oil paint. Flat areas of vibrant, saturated pigment are juxtaposed with woven glazes of translucent colour to create dynamic, charged compositions. His work represents an ongoing exploration of the ground between figuration and abstraction.

Jonathan trained at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen. Exhibitions include Royal Society of British Artists and Works on Paper Fair, Royal College of Art. He lives in Lewes, East Sussex.whatever the subject, genre or era.

‘I never know what journey each painting might take me on, but each one offers me a dialogue between what I want to express and what works on canvas with paint. A dialogue of surprises, discoveries and new approaches keeps my process alive and challenging hence new developments are a continual part of the identity of my work.’
